Happy Valentine's Day!
I hope that everyone out there is having a fun and romantic Valentine’s Day with that very special somebody in your life! I personally am a huge fan of Valentines Day, an opportunity once a year to take a break from the everyday grind and show the person you love just how much they mean to you.I have some friends out there (you know who you are) who don’t exactly “buy into that hallmark holiday” and even go out of their way to avoid it altogether! I always enjoy sharing my Valentine’s Day fun facts with them (although I’m usually met with sighs and the occasional eye roll). Despite that……..
Trevor’s Valentine’s Day FUN Facts!
Did you know Valentine’s Day dates all the way back to ancient Rome, and became linked with love starting in 1381 when Geoffrey Chaucer (you know the guy, Father of English literature, widely considered the greatest English poet of the Middle Ages, that Geoffrey Chaucer) wrote a poem in honor of the engagement between England’s King Richard II and Anne of Bohemia. When it comes to giving Valentine’s Day cards it was already a popular tradition in the 1700’s, long before Hallmark came along, when gift-giving and exchanging handmade cards on Valentine’s Day had become common in England. Hand-made Valentine cards made of lace, ribbons, and featuring cupids and hearts then spread all the way to the American colonies.
- Every year 1 billion Valentine's Day cards are sent, second only to Christmas!
- Over 220 million roses are produced for the holiday each year. More than 35 million boxes of heart shaped candy are sold.
- While candy and flowers are by far the most popular gifts around 20% of Americans will splurge on Jewelry.
- Over 6 million couples are likely to become engaged on Valentine's Day every year!
Now I’m not saying that Valentine’s Day hasn’t become somewhat commercial today (as you can see above) but even without spending a dime I believe Valentine’s Day is a wonderful opportunity to spend some quality time with the person you love. I hope you have an awesome day!
